The Social Media “Dominatrix”

We are keeping this blog post PG but I know this title got your attention. So we survived the apocalypse, we survived the christmas madness and an overrated New Years Party! Its 2013 and you are about to get back into the swing of things and you are trying to figure out what Social Platform will dominate this year… Better yet, your next question is, “what platform will I dominate this year?”

Well lets start off with this, while the debate is on about which platforms are killing it at the moment, you must remember that the conversation you are having determines how effective your social engagement will be. After all the social platform was designed for you and your brand to have a conversation with your audience. So get comfortable, show up to the party, become a regular and start having a conversation.

Social Authenticity will count more than ever in 2013 as more brands start figuring out this social media thing. It is now more important to stand out by being real, personable and letting your character speak for your brand. Major brands will have social governance but that doesn’t mean you have to hold back. Opinions count, social reactions will elevate your SEO and finally get hide behind the curtains!

Okay now that we got that out-of-the-way, let’s get on with platforms and why they will have an impact in 2013

The top nominees for the social media dominatrix award:

Google Plus is the search engine “demigod” and hence will start to enforce people to take them seriously in 2013. The Penguin update was just the beginning of the social media governance. The power of +1 will have a power on blog posts, content and the ability to show up on page 1 of Google. As far as content is concerned we expect to see more businesses post and share their blog posts on Google Plus for the sake of SEO. Google hangouts will be the virtual identity of meet-ups and with it easy to upload you tube video selection, one must think that we shall start to see more video shows courtesy of Google hangouts! My favourite thing about this platform is the sleek usability of the mobile version of this platform. I love how my iPad and iPhone view the news feed and images and hope to use Google Hangouts on a iPhone 5 pretty soon! (“Hint, hint!”). For location-based businesses start capitalizing on Google places!

Facebook will continue to look for reasons to be the social media “golden child” especially after a rough few months in 2012. While some might not bank on its share price, one can certainly bank that they will continue to try to maintain its grip as the leading social platforms of our decade. After celebrating its 1 billion user bragging rights, I predict that the integration with gaming, apps and platforms is just the start for this social empire. I think face book will start to develop mobile advertising in the near future and its easy to use pay advertising model can only get bigger from here on.

Twitter gives people liquid courage and will always be the under dog when it comes to social platforms. While some might think that this is the “red-headed step child” of social platforms, I think this 140 power tank allows you to make the most impact as far as networking, picking up leads and clients and allowing you to get viral real quick. There is question of whether Twitter will figure it out and start playing with the big boys, but I think that Twitter is only just getting started. While it might be a late bloomer, make no mistake Twitter can bring about mass impact to your social strategy if done correctly. Twitter does not censor its stream and attracts all generations of users.

YouTube is Google’s gift to Search Engine Results Pages and is the hidden gem stone. Visual Social Media is here to stay and revolutionize the web as we know it! The key statement here is You Tube is owned by Google and is the 2nd largest search engine in the world. After ending 2 days of Google Engage(Hidden Gem), I am more convinced that video advertising will be on top of brands hit list in the next few years. For the average mom and pop its free real estate. Heres a tip start capitalizing on keywords and start making kick ass compelling content videos and start uploading on you tube quick. That’s right kids, you tube videos start to show up on page 1 of Google!

Pinterest is starting to rank higher for traffic sources than Facebook in some cases today. Some reports show that pictures produce more traffic to websites and I believe this new comer to the social media party might be the life of the party. With women already using the platform a lot more, it has paved the way for brands to geo target their brands and products to cater to specific markets. With the help of boards and pinning what you like, nothing speaks social audience intelligence like P-interest and one would suspect that it wont be long before this intelligence will start to educate brands on how to position themselves on the platform. One thing is for sure visual engagement wont just be a fun thing to do, online stores are reporting this platform is complimenting the sales process! Catalogue marketing is starting to change how we view websites!

LinkedIn use to care to speak to one crowd and for the past few years dominated the corporate circuit. As years progress different users started getting their hands dirty with this platform and after the recent changes and sleek design one can only think perhaps the vision has room for change. While LinkedIn still has the same features with more updates lined up for 2013 one can predict that this aging social dinosaur still has some “swag” left in it. LinkedIn is like that jazz bar that always gives you that cool feeling when your on the platform…, As some would say its oldest and wisest of all social platforms!

And the winner is,……

You tell me, Tweet me @boscoanthony and give me your thoughts on what platform will kill it in 2013 and which one of the above bad boys makes the cut for you! One thing is for sure, each platform has a purpose and every style and business and brand is different… Its going to be a social year in 2013! Make it happen…

Bosco Anthony shares the magic Kool-Aid!

Regardless of platform, preference or following the crystal ball predicts integrated platforms. (The Social Guru’s call it, “the Social Scale!”)  - The social scale is defined as framework that will empower brands to communicate with its audiences in a timely fashion in ONE basic entity platform that will incorporate all social channels or mediums!

Some are thinking Hoot Suite, others might think of salesforce and Radian 6, The social CRM and dashboard will dominate in the coming months allowing users to have the power to control their brand message across social channels!

I also think companies are evolving and realize that Social media is here to stay… When the answers become clear the questions change, it’s no longer, ” Is Social media relevant?” but… (read the picture)

Google Plus eh? Perhaps I’ll start using mine more than once a year ;)

I’ve definitely started using LinkedIn a lot more. I think of it as the grown up’s Facebook. And I’ll always love Twitter.

Do you think Pinterest is a valuable tool for someone like me? A freelance copywriter?

I like every platform for different reasons. I have used LinkedIn more in the last quarter of 2012 and have met great people through tweeter as well. Professionals in my industry. Facebook & Linkedin have helped me to increase my brand visibility. I am still working on it. I haven’t used G+ as much, maybe I should. A lot of good points here. I will read it again an see what I can apply. That you for sharing your knowledge Bosco.

      Thanks for posting Karina,

You are right each platform has a purpose – it just depends if you want it to compliment your business process of if there is a need for it.
